Pop sensation Taylor Swift, known for her chart-topping hits, has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a member of the music branch. Swift’s inclusion comes after her contributions to the soundtracks of the 2022 film “Where the Crawdads Sing” and the 2019 movie adaptation of the musical “Cats.”
Ke Huy Quan, who recently won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the critically acclaimed film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is also among the new invitees. Quan’s co-star in the film, Stephanie Hsu, and the movie’s directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known as “the Daniels”), have also been selected to join the prestigious organization.
Additionally, actor Austin Butler, who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley, has been recognized for his talent and invited to become a member of the Academy.
With a total membership of over 10,000 individuals, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been actively working to diversify its ranks since the #OscarsSoWhite movement in 2015. In a notable shift towards inclusivity, the Academy revealed that 40% of the newly invited members identify as women, 34% belong to underrepresented ethnic or racial communities, and 52% hail from 50 countries and territories outside the United States.
The Academy’s commitment to expanding representation within its membership is seen as a crucial step toward recognizing and honoring diverse voices and perspectives in the film industry. As Taylor Swift, Austin Butler, Ke Huy Quan, and many others accept their invitations, the Academy continues its ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity and celebrate excellence in motion pictures.
