Conclave Triumphs at SAG Awards as Chalamet and Moore Secure Top Honors

CultureFilm & TvConclave Triumphs at SAG Awards as Chalamet and Moore Secure Top Honors

The papal thriller Conclave took home the top honor at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, winning the coveted best movie ensemble award. The film, featuring a distinguished cast including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, delves into the secretive world of Vatican politics during the selection of a fictional pope. Accepting the award on behalf of the cast, Fiennes emphasized the importance of community, both in filmmaking and in life, highlighting how collaboration remains central to their craft.

The victory comes as the real-life Pope Francis remains in critical condition with double pneumonia. Rossellini expressed her concern, offering heartfelt wishes for his recovery after the ceremony. Conclave’s win strengthens its position as a strong contender for the Best Picture award at the upcoming Academy Awards, particularly since actors, who make up the largest voting body for the Oscars, also vote for the SAG Awards.

Adding to the evening’s surprises, Timothée Chalamet won best movie actor for his role in A Complete Unknown, portraying a young Bob Dylan navigating his early days in New York’s music scene. This upset came as a shock, particularly since Adrien Brody had been leading the awards circuit for his role in The Brutalist. Chalamet, visibly emotional, shared that he had given his all to the role, expressing his deep desire to join the ranks of acting greats.

Demi Moore claimed the best actress award for her role in The Substance, where she portrays a fading celebrity seeking eternal youth. Reflecting on her journey, Moore shared how receiving her SAG card at 15 provided her with purpose and direction during a challenging time in her life.

In supporting roles, Kieran Culkin won for A Real Pain, while Zoe Saldana took home the award for Emilia Perez. On the television front, FX’s Shogun was recognized as the best drama ensemble, while Only Murders in the Building earned the best comedy ensemble award, with Selena Gomez delivering a humorous acceptance speech.

The ceremony also honored Jane Fonda with a lifetime achievement award, celebrating her contributions as both an actor and activist. Fonda reminded the audience of the strength found in empathy, dismissing criticism of being “woke” as nothing more than caring about others.
