Cynthia Erivo was honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, recognizing her contributions to LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. The award, given by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), celebrates media professionals who have made a significant impact in advocating for the community. The ceremony will be available for streaming on Hulu starting April 12.
During her acceptance speech, Erivo spoke about the challenges of living authentically. “I have spoken about being your whole self and your true self. I speak about the prizes that come from being you against odds,” she said. “But rarely do I acknowledge how hard it can be. So I thought that I would make some room for those of us who are trying to find more courage to exist as we want because I think this is the space to do that.”
Erivo, an Oscar-nominated performer and winner of Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards, is widely recognized for her role as Elphaba Thropp in the 2024 Universal musical film Wicked. Based on the acclaimed 2003 Broadway musical and the 1995 novel, the film has set a new record as the highest-grossing stage musical adaptation, surpassing Mamma Mia!. She is also set to host the 2025 Tony Awards in June.
At the GLAAD ceremony, Erivo acknowledged the unique struggles faced by different members of the LGBTQ+ community. “For some, the road has not been paved with yellow bricks and instead, paved with glass and potholes,” she remarked, referencing imagery from The Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Her words resonated with many attendees, highlighting the importance of resilience and community support.
The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is named in honor of the late casting director Stephen F. Kolzak, who dedicated his life to combating homophobia and the stigma surrounding HIV in the entertainment industry. By recognizing Erivo’s advocacy, GLAAD continues its mission to elevate voices that inspire progress and acceptance.
Erivo’s recognition at the GLAAD Media Awards solidifies her status as a powerful advocate and role model, using her platform to promote visibility and inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community.
