The Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships is currently witnessing an impressive display of sporting prowess, primarily from the Chinese contingent. The nation has swiftly risen to the top of the medal table, accumulating an impressive total of 12 medals, nine of which are gold. On Tuesday, the Mixed 3m & 10m Team final of diving witnessed China bagging its ninth gold medal. The Chinese team outshone competitors from Mexico and Germany, claiming the top spot in commanding fashion. This success story was encapsulated in a social media post by a user on the Chinese platform Sina Weibo, who hailed, “China’s diving dream team has never disappointed us.”
A day prior, on Monday, the Chinese team dominated the Artistic Swimming Team Technical Routine final. Scoring a total of 238.0033, they seized the gold medal, leaving the US and Japan in their wake, who had to settle for silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The victories didn’t stop there. In the women’s 3m synchronized springboard and men’s 10m synchronized platform, the Chinese divers produced stellar performances, securing two gold medals. The defending champions from the previous Swimming World Championships, Chen Yiwen and Chang Yani, returned to continue their reign in the women’s 3m synchronized event, earning gold with a score of 341.94.
In the men’s 10m synchronized platform final, featuring 12 teams, the Chinese duo Yang Hao and Lian Junjie demonstrated their superior skills with a total of 477.75 points from their six dives. Their performance was a class apart, putting them nearly 40 points ahead of their closest competitors.
Sunday also marked a successful day for the Chinese athletes, as they bagged two more gold medals. Peng Jianfeng triumphed in the men’s 1m springboard event. Meanwhile, in the women’s 10m synchronized platform final, China’s female diving champions Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan put on a show-stopping performance. They secured the championship with a commanding score of 369.84 points, surpassing the second-place British pair of Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson by 58.08 points. This significant victory also earned them a place in the diving competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
A team comprising of 22 female swimmers and 19 male swimmers from China are competing in the championships, participating in all 42 events. The championships, originally slated for 2021, are presently being held in Fukuoka, Japan.
