Over the past weekend, Beijing played host to an exciting series of winter sports events, with the ISU World Cup short track speed skating competition taking center stage. The event, which drew a significant number of fans and notable personalities, saw Chinese short track speed skater Liu Shaoang lead the national team to a triumphant haul of one gold, four silver, and five bronze medals at the Capital Indoor Stadium.

Shaoang’s stellar performance in the men’s 1,000 meters race, clocking a winning time of 1:23.696, earned China its first gold medal of the event. He continued his impressive run by helping the team secure a bronze medal in the men’s 5,000 meters relay. Joining the national team in April along with his brother Liu Shaolin, originally from Hungary, Shaoang expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to compete on home ice, following a year-long hiatus due to ISU restrictions.

An unfortunate error by his brother Shaolin in the last lap of the 5,000 meters relay dashed hopes for another gold, but Shaolin remained optimistic, viewing the mistake as a learning opportunity and reaffirming their capability to win gold.

The women’s events also saw significant Chinese success, with skater Gong Li contributing a silver medal in the women’s 1,500 meters and a bronze in the 1,000 meters. Gong’s achievements were a testament to her skill and determination, and she acknowledged the need for continuous improvement.

Veteran skater Fan Kexin made a remarkable return to competition, clinching two silver medals in the women’s 500 meters and the 2,000 meters mixed relay, followed by a bronze in the 500 meters. Fan’s affection for the sport was palpable as she repeated her Beijing Olympics gesture of bowing and kissing the ice surface, expressing her love for the sport and commitment to always give her best.

High-profile figures such as Olympic champion Wang Meng and coach Kim Sun-tae attended the event, highlighting the growing popularity of short track in China. Lin Xiaojun, another notable athlete who transferred from South Korea to China, unfortunately suffered a right leg injury during the men’s 500 meters, raising concerns about his participation in future events.

The ISU World Cup event in Beijing wasn’t the only highlight of the weekend. The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final at the National Indoor Stadium saw remarkable performances, including a historic quadruple Axel jump by 19-year-old US skater Ilia Malinin. Malinin secured victory in the men’s singles with a personal-best score, surpassing two-time world champion Shoma Uno of Japan.

In addition to these events, the legacy of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was commemorated with podium finishers in short track and figure skating receiving a Loong Dwen Dwen, a dragon-themed version of the Olympic mascot Bing Dwen Dwen.

The weekend’s sporting celebrations extended to the FIS women’s freeski halfpipe World Cup at Genting Snow Park in Chongli, where Winter Olympics champion Gu Ailing, also known as Eileen Gu, triumphed. This marked her first competition in China since her spectacular performance at the 2022 Olympics.

The weekend’s events not only showcased China’s growing prowess in winter sports but also highlighted the country’s commitment to promoting and celebrating these athletic disciplines, building on the legacy of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. As the ISU World Cup continues, fans and athletes alike look forward to more thrilling performances and memorable moments in the world of winter sports.
